How to Improve the Wi-Fi Network Signal Strength?

How to Improve the Wi-Fi Network Signal Strength?

Wi-Fi is just radio waves, and many things can cause interference. But a strong Wi-Fi signal can give you faster performance and better coverage distance, so it’s important to properly position and configure your router for optimal signal strength.
Point the Antenna Up

Routers generally have physical antennas that are adjustable. The antenna often comes pointed horizontally to fit the router inside its box. For maximum signal strength, position your router’s antenna vertically, pointing straight up. If you have two antennas, you won’t get better performance by pointing them in different directions.

Position Your Router Properly

Consider where you put your router. If you have a large home or office, place the router close to the center to maximize coverage. If you position the router at one end of the building, you may have poor (or no) signal at the other end. But, if you already have your router positioned at one end of your home and the signal strength is just fine on the other side, you don’t need to move it.

For maximum coverage, the router should also be high up. Placing it on the floor is the worst location possible – place it on a high shelf, if possible.

Avoid Interference

Don’t place the router on or near large metal objects, such as metal shelves or filing cabinets. These can block the signal. Metal or stone walls can also block Wi-Fi, while wood and plaster walls won’t cause any problems.

You might be able to root out other sources of interference. For example: microwave ovens, 2.4 GHz cordless phones, and 2.4 GHz baby monitors all have the potential to interfere with a 2.4 GHz Wi-Fi signal. If you have one of these devices in direct line-of-sight between a laptop and a router, they could cause your Wi-Fi to cut in and out. The solution? Move any one of them so the interfering device isn't in between them. If you get interference from a cordless phone, you might want to purchase newer 5.8 GHz cordless phones; these work on a difference frequency band and won't interfere with Wi-Fi.

How to Fix High CPU Usage in Windows 10?

How to Fix High CPU Usage in Windows 10?

Your computer's central processing unit (CPU) interprets and processes the requests and data for your entire computer. Some programs and services take a higher amount of resources than others, and when your computer's CPU usage is high, it can slow down the processing on all requests. High CPU usage can even lead to computer crashes and data corruption in some cases. Fixing high CPU usage allows your computer to run more smoothly and efficiently.

Step 1. Scan your computer with your currently installed antivirus software. In most antivirus software, you need to hit a button labeled "Scan" or "Scan Now." Some antivirus software allow you to initiate a scan by right-clicking its system tray icon and choosing "Scan." Allow the scan to completely check your computer and remove any viruses or malware found. Viruses can often use large portions of your system resources and slow your computer down.

Step 2. Click "Start" and type "System Configuration" in the search box. Double-click the "System Configuration" entry. Go to the "Startup" tab on the Microsoft System Configuration window.

Step 3. Uncheck programs in this list you do not want to automatically start up. Many programs add themselves to the startup list and launch when your computer boots up. If you have too many programs doing this, you might not have enough system resources available to launch the programs you need to use. Click "Apply," then "OK." Choose to restart your computer later.

Step 4. Go to "Start," then "Control Panel." Click "Performance Information and Tools." Select "Adjust visual effects." Pick "Adjust for best performance." Click "OK." Your computer may have problems running efficiently when all of Windows 7's visual effects are turned on. This setting changes the visual effects to be optimized towards system performance instead of aesthetics.

How to Reduce Virtual Memory Usage for Firefox in Windows 10?

How to Reduce Virtual Memory Usage for Firefox in Windows 10?

When Mozilla Firefox uses too much memory, it can adversely affect computer performance. Most Firefox memory problems come from extensions, an out-of-date version of the browser or an excessive number of open tabs. By keeping up-to-date and being judicious about your extensions and content, you can keep your browser running smoothly. Giving Firefox a restart now and then doesn't hurt either, especially if it's been a while.
1. Check Memory Usage

There are two ways to measure Firefox's memory usage: The Windows Task Manager and Firefox's about:memory page.

Task Manager shows Firefox's total memory usage compared to other apps and processes. To access the Task Manager, press Ctrl-Alt-Del on your keyboard and select Task Manager. Windows 8 users can also press Windows-X and select Task Manager from the power user menu.

About:memory gives a detailed breakdown Firefox's memory usage. To access it, start Firefox and type about:memory in the address bar, then press the Enter key. On the page, click Measure to analyze Firefox's memory usage.

2. Update Firefox

If you're not running the latest version of Firefox, updating can help with some memory issues. Firefox typically updates automatically or prompts you to update depending on your settings.

To manually update Firefox, click the Menu button followed by Help. Select About Firefox and wait for Firefox to download the latest update. Click Restart Firefox to Update to complete the update process.

3. Close Unnecessary Tabs

While tabs are handy for multitasking online, having too many of them open at one time can slow down Firefox. Each tabbed Web page is stored in Firefox's memory, adding to the amount of overall memory used. Well-organized bookmarks are a good way to reduce your tab usage, as websites that need to be visited frequently but not open constantly should be closed when not in use.

4. Update or Disable Extensions

Carefully choosing which extensions you really want or need is key to reducing memory consumption, especially if you run a lot of extensions. Keeping extensions up-to-date can also be helpful.

Use the Firefox Plugin Check page to check whether your plugins need updating. Click Update Now for anything out-of-date. This is generally only required for plugins: Regular extensions update automatically, unless you've disabled automatic updates in your Firefox settings.

To disable or remove an extension, click the Menu button, followed by Add-ons. Click Disable to switch off the extension or Remove to uninstall it.

5. Use Content-Blocking Extensions

Scripted content like videos, interactive Web interfaces, games and ads all add to Firefox's memory consumption. Several extensions are available to reduce how much of this content is displayed and thus how much memory it consumes. Flash and script blockers often disrupt the scripted functions of websites like YouTube, banking websites and online stores. Use the extension's built-in whitelist to create exemptions for these sites and restore their full functionality.

Ad blockers like Adblock Plus block intrusive advertisements like banners and ad videos.

Flash blockers like Flashblock stop all Flash-based content from playing.

Complete script blockers like NoScript are the "nuclear" option and block absolutely all scripts except those added to the extension's whitelist.
